Decumanus Maximus

In Santa Eulalia street, just before reaching the Puerta de la Villa, you can see a section of one of the two main streets of the Roman city: the decumanus maximus. The rest of the ancient road runs under the current pedestrian street to its point of origin, next to the Roman bridge.

The decumanus maximus was over six meters wide so that carts could circulate in both directions. During the 1st and 2nd centuries, its sidewalks were porticoed to protect pedestrians from the elements.

Other archaeological remains can be visited in the annex room that takes its name from this street.
