The Carrerita festival in Villanueva de la Serena has been celebrated since the 18th century and is declared of Tourist Interest in Extremadura. A festival that is lived with intensity and emotion every Easter, specifically every Easter Sunday, and whose name comes from the race that the bearers of the image of the Virgin of the Aurora run to meet the image of the Risen Christ. A race that lasts approximately three minutes and represents the joy of Christians upon hearing the news of the Lord's resurrection. The attendees number in the thousands each year at this festivity, which takes place in a central aisle formed by the attendees in the Plaza de España of the town, where from early in the morning citizens gather to get the best spot to witness the swift race and contemplate the scene. The ringing of bells from the parish bell tower announces the start of the race and the applause, jubilation, joy, and flower petals thrown at the images mark the end of the race. From that moment on, all attendees walk in procession before the main door of the Church of the Assumption with a loud burst of fireworks.
