On May 16, 1811, the town of La Albuera in Badajoz experienced a historic event, as one of the fiercest battles of the Spanish War of Independence was fought there. The Napoleonic army under Marshal Soult clashed with the Anglo-Hispanic-Portuguese allied army commanded by Marshal Beresford. About 6000 allied soldiers and 4000 French died in the Battle of La Albuera. There were no victors.

Every year in May, the town reenacts this battle and takes to the streets armed and dressed in period costumes to commemorate the events that took place in the town. Various activities are held, among which a theatrical reenactment of the battle stands out, featuring a large number of participants, local residents.

Parades of all the Regiments dressed in period uniforms also take place, which march through all the streets of the town to the celebration camp. The commemoration of the Battle of La Albuera is declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
