Location: Walk near the lake and the castle hill to the dam. Easily accessible via the riverside promenade.
The route starts at the Tourist Office (hereinafter TO), then continues along the riverside promenade with views of Cancho de la Picota and joins the path near the lake, bordering the castle hill. The walker will pass by the viewpoint of "Pata del Buey", passing by the Canoeing Technification Center, which stands out for its modern architecture deserving of several awards. The walker will continue along the path, enjoying the lake and the impressive rocky mass crowned by the remains of the Arab fortress, until reaching the Granary from the Bronze Age, where one can enjoy this archaeological site with more than 5,000 years of history.
The route continues to the dam, where there is the option to walk almost its kilometer in length and return, or on the contrary, stay and enjoy the impressive views offered by the meadows of Matachel and the lake itself. The walker will return along the same path to the TO.
ENVIRONMENT
By taking this route, we can see a wide variety of birds: Thekla lark, Sardinian and blackcap warblers, as well as goldfinches, linnets, greenfinches, black wheatear, Bonelli's eagle, Alpine swift, African swift, Eurasian crag martin, Rock bunting, Eurasian eagle-owl, and a great diversity of water birds. In summer, we find the whiskered tern enjoying the high temperatures of the region, and in winter, the alpine accentor can be seen. It is worth noting that on the wall of the Alange dam, there is the largest known colony of Alpine swifts in Extremadura.
Within the vegetation, we can find typical species of sunny and rocky areas such as the wild olive, broom, or kermes oak.
