This 'Rural Walk' runs around the Cornalvo Reservoir, a Roman construction over the Albarregas stream, used since ancient times to supply water to part of the city of Emerita Augusta (now Mérida) and still in use today. The entire reservoir area is part of the Cornalvo Natural Park. It is an area with gentle terrain only interrupted by the mountain ranges of Sierra Bermeja and Sierra del Moro, which form the southern boundary of the area. The Cornalvo Natural Park is designated as a Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA), under the name 'Embalse de Cornalvo and Sierra Bermeja', and is home to over 200 different bird species, including the black stork, black vulture, and Iberian imperial eagle. As for the vegetation in the area, it is characterized by dehesa formations, forests of holm oaks and cork oaks, and scrubland. For this rural walk, comfortable sports shoes are recommended as the entire route runs along dirt roads. It is not recommended to go during rainy months, as some sections of the walk may be challenging due to the terrain conditions.
