Just 3 km from Valverde de Leganés towards Olivenza is the Franciscan Convent of the Mother of God, which had a very close relationship with the town and several towns in the neighboring kingdom of Portugal. According to tradition, it was founded in the 16th century by San Pedro de Alcántara himself, who lived in the Convent for 11 years. Currently, the building has been rehabilitated, after being in ruins since the disentailment of Mendizábal and retains a large number of artistic elements. The building features a large church with a ribbed vault decorated with rich and colorful stuccos. In the presbytery part, the image of Our Lady of the Incarnation was displayed in a niche, which, according to tradition, was gifted to Valverde de Leganés by Enrique de Coimbra, bishop of Ceuta and resident in Olivenza in the first half of the 16th century. Behind this niche, there is a quadrangular space topped by a semicircular dome that functioned as a dressing room. On its walls, you can appreciate paintings that represent the four evangelists and some events from the life of San Pedro. From the conventual building, a small cloister built in brick and several rooms dedicated to the residence of the monks are preserved. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this Convent was reused for multiple tasks. ----- Route on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/r9KxGujZQcvDHx5q7
