El Puente del Arzobispo

El Puente del Arzobispo is a municipality and town in the province of Toledo, in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. It is known for its ceramics, whose traditional color is emerald green. Along with Talavera de la Reina, they constitute two of the most important pottery tradition population centers in the country. It has a population of 1153 inhabitants (INE 2022).

Toponymy
Juan I, king of Castile, first established the name Villafranca de la Puente del Arzobispo, in reference to the bridge built by Archbishop Pedro Tenorio. Gradually, it evolved into the current name.

History
The population was founded by the Archbishop of Toledo, Pedro Tenorio, in the second half of the 14th century. The archbishop owned the neighboring Alcolea de Tajo, with an extensive municipal area. Within that area, it was necessary to cross the Tagus River to go to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Previously, fragile boats were used, causing frequent accidents. Therefore, Pedro Tenorio ordered the construction of a large bridge to cross the river. The archbishop wanted a town to oversee the construction, and hence the birth of the town.

During the Spanish Civil War and the Republican rule, the name of the town was changed to Puente de la FAI.
