This panoramic route comprising three viali named after Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli was laid out between 1865 and 1870. Lined with luxurious mansions, it wends its way across the hillside between rows of pine and cypress trees, and eventually reaches the huge esplanade of Piazzale Michelangelo. Here a monument erected in 1875 in memory of Michelangelo dominates the square, which offers superb views of the city. The avenue continues to climb up to the church of San Miniato al Monte, which stands on the hillside overlooking Florence.
