The Christian victory in the Battle of Clavijo and the liberation of the legendary tribute of the 'hundred maidens', which the Asturleonese kings annually paid to the Muslim caliphs, are commemorated. The ceremony is similar to that of antiquity: the young 'cantaderas', dressed in medieval fashion, dance to the rhythm set by the 'sotadora', a Moorish woman who was supposed to instruct them in Muslim customs, advancing from the Town Hall square to the cathedral.
