The origin of the Alsasua Carnival as it is known today is documented in the year 1982 when it was recovered thanks to the work of the accordionist Enrike Zelaia. Between 1930 and that year, the carnival was prohibited as in other parts of Spain.
This carnival in its rural version has an unknown origin but with a marked ancestral character.
The Alsasua Carnival lasts for three days with different events each day. Everything begins on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday with the Carnaval Txikito, a day dedicated entirely to the youngest, who, like in other towns, dress up as various characters.
It continues on Fat Tuesday with its Rural Carnival, the most prominent and anticipated date for everyone, where the most feared characters, the Momotxorros, appear. These, along with others like the Akerra or the Sorginak, will dance several times and in different places the famous Momotxorroen Dantza. Everything ends the following Saturday with the "Piñata Day" with its urban and current carnival version.
Curiosities:
As a curious fact, I will tell you that the feeling of fear that one may have during the Momotxorros parade is quite distressing at some point. The noise and the fire take over the streets of Alsasua. It is a must to witness one of the Momotxorroen Dantza.
