Lake Braies is a small alpine lake located in the Val di Braies (a side valley to the Val Pusteria) at 1,496 m above sea level. in the municipality of Braies (BZ), about 97 kilometers from Bolzano.
To reach the lake, take the junction for Val di Braies, between the villages of Monguelfo and Villabassa in Alta Pusteria. After having traveled a few kilometers, you will come across the only junction, and take the road towards the lake. After passing the villages of Ferrara (Schmieden) and San Vito (St. Veit), you arrive at the parking lot (for a fee in the tourist season), where there is a large hotel-restaurant, the Hotel Pragser Wildsee linked to the pioneering figure of Emma Hellenstainer.
You can take a ride around the shores of the lake. This path is on the western shore, flat and wide, while on the eastern shore it is steep and narrow, with some steps. Nevertheless, this beautiful walk that leads to the foot of the Croda del Becco, can be faced by any hiker. During the winter, these paths (especially the one on the eastern shore) are often closed, due to the dangers of avalanches. It is however possible to make an excursion around the lake, since its surface is solidly frozen.
