Viewpoint and hermitage of Monte Faro |
Mount Faro, located at 1187 meters above sea level, is situated between the municipalities of Chantada and Carballedo in the province of Lugo, and Rodeiro in the province of Pontevedra. It is a protected natural area with the designation of Site of Community Importance and Special Area of Conservation for Natural Values. It has a hermitage dating back to the 17th century, but thanks to archaeological excavations, it is known that this area was previously occupied by constructions from earlier periods. The current temple is a fortress-like building with a Latin cross plan and a gabled roof. The interior is covered with a barrel vault and features a triumphal arch leading to the main altar, which houses a neoclassical altarpiece. Coinciding with September 8th, a large pilgrimage is celebrated at this place of worship.
